West Palm Beach (CBS12) —

Fencing, martial arts and weightlifting were just some of the sports going on at the Palm Beach County Convention Center this weekend. The Sunshine State Games featured more than 2,000 amateur athletes and coaches competing in 10 different sports.

The Florida Senior games were competing simultaneously, featuring 53 year old Heidi Bowser. The pride of South Florida weightlifting broke State Records in the squat and dead lift, and broke a national record for bench with a lift of 193.9 pounds.

“It’s a very enlightening and empowering thing for a woman,” stays Bowser after she set the new national mark. “When you’re younger you’re in sports, but it’s great when you’re older and can still do something out there. My kids were watching, so for me, that’s awesome.”

Over 200-thousand athletes have participated at the Sunshine State Games since 1980.
