The University of North Florida men’s tennis defeated Stetson 4-1 to earn its second-ever A-Sun Championship title in program history on Sunday at the UNF Tennis Courts.

A few hours later, the Ospreys women’s team claimed their own conference title, beating Stetson by the same score.

“What an emotional day for the entire department, university and especially the tennis programs,” said men’s coach Matt Lucas. “I have to give a congrats to [women’s coach] Mariana [Cobra]. But I am so proud of my guys, the resiliency they showed.

“We are excited to go to the NCAAs – no matter where we go – its going to be fun. It is a special day for our athletic department.”

The UNF men finished the regular season 13-9 and 6-0 in conference play. The Ospreys men last won the A-Sun title in 2016.

Senior Lasse Muscheites of Germany was named the men’s tournament MVP, clinching the match for the Ospreys at No. 2 singles in the third set.

It was more like business as usual for the UNF women (17-7, 5-1), who won the A-Sun title for the fourth consecutive year. Senior Luise Intert won in singles, doubles and MVP honors.

“This is what we have worked for since day one in the fall,” Cobra said. “I always tell the team that we have to peak at the right time and this is the perfect example of us doing so.”

Both UNF teams will learn their NCAA Tournament opponent on May 1 with the first and second rounds beginning May 11 at campus sites.
