Dickey Betts Returns to the Stage for “Live Rehearsal” in Florida

On Tuesday May 15, southern rock icon Dickey Betts performed live for the first time since 2014 with a sold-out show at Sarasota, Florida’s White Buffalo Saloon.

Betts stuck to the classics during the 11-song single set, digging into the Allman Brothers songbook with an opening “Hotlanta” followed by “Statesboro Blues,” and then his own Great Southern track “Nothing You Can Do.” Later he also played his solo song “My Getaway” as well as perhaps his most famous Allman’s tune “Blue Sky.”

Betts played alongside his son Duane as well as Damon Fowler—a former member of ABB founding drummer Butch Trucks’ The Freight Train Band—keyboardist Mike Kach, bassist Pedro Arevalo and dual drummers Frankie Lombardi and Steve Camilleri. (Duane, Lombardi, Kach and Arevalo were all members of Dickey’s Great Southern band before his 2014 retirement.)

The guitarist closed his “live rehearsal” show with a double dose of “Whipping Post” and “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.”

Betts officially kicks off his tour on May 17 in the Allmans’ longtime home of Macon, Ga.
