Here, it’s used to measure overall team quality.

The basics: The Florida Gators haven’t been overwhelming in Jim McElwain’s first two years, but they’ve won the SEC East both times just the same. They should continue to field good defenses, and if offensive-minded coach Jim McElwain can get that side of the ball cooking over the long term, there’s reason to be excited about the Gators. For now, they’re a solid team that will try to emerge from the East and swing an upset in the SEC Championship Game. They’ve gotten half of that done in 2015 and ‘16.

Projected final regular season record? S&P+ projects the Gators will finish 8-4.

Biggest game left: The Cocktail Party with Georgia on Oct. 28, as usual, looms large in the SEC East race. The winner should be in good shape.

Best game left: The opener against Michigan. Two legacy teams with huge fanbases at AT&T Stadium in the first game of the year seems just fine.
