Questions, questions, questions.

With the best running back in FSU history departing for the NFL, many are wondering who will be the next playmaker. Deondre Francois? He is no Jameis Winston, but Alabama has proven great quarterbacks are not always necessary for a National Championship. Might it be Derwin James? In FSU’s spring game, Derwin dominated the field with quick, responsive reads of the football on every play. He led the team with 7 tackles, and James always creates opportunities for the defense.

How about Cam Akers?

Akers has been a fan and media favorite since his early enrollment back in January. An amazing highlight film and otherworldly high school stats hyped expectations. Will he be able to deliver?

Cam rushed 87 yards on 10 carries and 15 yards on 2 receptions in the spring game. His awareness of his surroundings while scoping downfield was impressive considering his minimal college experience. (The young man should’ve been getting fitted in a tuxedo for his senior prom.) It is fair to say his impeccable vision comes from his quarterback experience in high school where his senior year he completed 173 passes, a .618 completion rate, and amassed over 8,000 yards passing in his high school career.

Though a high school quarterback, many of Akers runs in the spring game were more physical than FSU is used to seeing from their running backs. One of Akers’ receptions ended with him taking a tight turn to slip out of a tackle gaining more yardage. He does not shy away from hard hits. His feet did not fail him either
