FSU football faces tough history vs. Alabama in CFA Kickoff Game – Tomahawk Nation
The Florida State Seminoles have won their last seven games to begin a college football season. The Alabama Crimson Tide? 15 straight successful openers. Obviously, something’s gotta give when the two meet on September 2. And with regard to the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, history does not exactly smile on the ’Noles.
FSU is playing in this game for the first time. ’Bama has already been there four times, all since 2008, and won all four by an average score of 34-16.85. And two of those games came against teams then ranked in top 10, in 2008 vs. No. 9 Clemson and 2009 vs. No. 7 Virginia Tech. Both of those vanquished Tide opponents are ACC teams, of course— and conference history doesn’t favor Florida State either. The ACC is 1-7 in the CFA Kickoff Game. The SEC, on the other hand, is 9-2.
One of the many storylines of this game will be that of mentor vs. pupil, as Nick Saban and his protege Jimbo Fisher face off as head coaches for the first time. If Seminole fans are looking for a piece of history that bodes well for their side, they need only reference Fisher’s impressive 9-1 record against the SEC since taking the helm in Tallahassee.
Saban, meanwhile, is 6-2 against the ACC while at Alabama, with his most recent matchup resulting in a loss against Clemson in the national title game that capped off the 2016 season. His only other loss against the conference came in his first ever game vs. the ACC with the Tide: a 21-14 loss to the ’Noles in 2007.
