Nia Wesley joined KENS 5 as a digital journalist in February 2017. The Houston native had just completed an internship with ABC News in New York City, where she worked on “Nightline” during the 2016 Presidential Election.

Wesley began her journey with journalism in high school when she completed a summer internship with her community’s newspaper, writing her own weekly column for teens.

Wesley is a 2016 graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, where she received numerous scholarships. During college, she interned at Austin’s KXAN, Houston’s ABC owned and operated KTRK, and the Daily Dot website.

She also served as president of UT’s National Association of Black Journalists chapter for two years. With the organization, Wesley served as executive producer over “Blackout,” a documentary assessing the social impacts of Austin’s gentrification. The group-produced and shot project was screened to an audience of more than 400 on the UT campus, followed by a panel of Austin’s city leaders.

During her time at UT, Wesley made the Dean’s Honor’s List and was also crowned “Influencer of the Year” by Orange Magazine for her involvement on and off campus.

In her free time, Nia enjoys trying new restaurants, hearing live music, binge-watching her latest addiction, and keeping up with the latest celebrity gossip. She hopes one day to become a world-renowned media personality.
