The New Orleans Pelicans announced their coaching staff under Stan Van Gundy on Monday afternoon and the team is elevating Naismith Hall of Famer and WNBA legend Teresa Weatherspoon to a full-time coaching position.
Weatherspoon, 54, becomes the eighth full-time female assistant coach in the NBA. She was also the women’s head coach at Louisiana Tech, her alma mater, from 2009 to 2014. She led them to a pair of regular-season conference titles in 2009 and 2011 and a conference tournament title in 2010.
She joins Toronto’s Brittni Donaldson, Cleveland’s Lindsay Gottlieb, Dallas’ Jenny Boucek, San Antonio’s Becky Hammon and Memphis’ Sonia Raman as women who are on-the-bench assistants in the NBA, while Sacramento’s Lindsey Harding and the Los Angeles Clippers’ Natalie Nakase are full-time player development
