There will be a first time Division II NCAA football champion.

West Florida and Texas A&M-Commerce won their semifinal games on Saturday and will meet at 5 p.m. Dec. 16 for the national championship at Children’s Mercy Park.

Texas A&M-Commerce, making its sixth NCAA appearance, defeated Harding (Ark.) 31-17. The Lions (13-1) got 288 yards passing and two touchdowns from quarterback Luis Perez.

West Florida (11-3) continued its amazing season with a 27-17 victory at Indiana (Pa.). This is the second season of football for the Pensacola, Fla., school.

That’s right. The program hired its football Pete Shinnick in 2014, enrolled its first recruiting class in 2015, and played its first season last year, finishing 5-6.

The Argos started 5-3 and have won six straight, including four in the NCAA Championship.
