1 dead, 4 hospitalized after car crashes into Florida restaurant

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A 80-year-old woman was killed and four others were hospitalized after a car crashed into a Florida restaurant Saturday afternoon.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 24-year-old Cape Coral man was driving on Pine Island Road south of Island Avenue in Matlacha when his car swerved off the road.

Troopers said the vehicle then crashed into a restaurant called “The BBQ Place” and hit five people who were sitting in an outdoor dining area.

After striking the building, the man then hit a parked motorcycle, mailboxes, garbage cans, and then re-entered the road where he crashed into a pickup truck.

One person, an 80-year-old woman from Matlacha, was killed in the collision. The other four victims, whose ages range from 55 to 77 years old, were hospitalized for their injuries, according to an FHP report.

As of this report, one person, a 77-year-old Matlacha man, is in serious condition.

The crash is still under investigation, and the Cape Coral man could face charges for the incident, troopers said.
