Hundreds march 700-foot Pride flag along John Ringling Bridge in protest

SARASOTA, Fla., (WFLA) — Sarasota celebrated Pride on Saturday morning. Hundreds of people marched a 700-foot Pride flag across the John Ringling Bridge.

The march follows the Governor’s ‘Freedom Summer’ order, which only allows bridges to light up in red, white, and blue.

It’s a community that Project Pride SRQ said is united by love, courage, and resilience.

“All the things that are against us as queer people, make us stronger, because we still persevere and say this is me,” said India Miller, who attended the event.

Jason Champion, with Project Pride, said representation matters and they carried the flag to not just represent the LGBTQ+ community, but their allies, as well.

“We decided to walk the flag this year because it’s going to be lighting the bridge in our own way. This is definitely in response to “Freedom of Summer.” This is also a freedom of choice, freedom of expression, and freedom of freedom, period,” Champion said.

The ‘Freedom Summer’ order goes from May 27 to September 2, and also applies to other groups, like Moms Against Gun Violence or Women’s Equality Day.
