Pelican with missing eye, broken wing rescued by Florida deputy

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — An injured Brown pelican was found and rescued by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office following Thursday’s severe storms.

Deputies received several reports from concerned residents regarding the animal, which was spotted at Dee Dee Bartels Boat Ramp in Fernandina Beach.

After the marine unit was able to capture the pelican, they discovered it had a broken wing and a missing eye.

Officials found a bird sanctuary and emergency veterinarian who agreed to care for the pelican.

“Our priority is ensuring its safe relocation and recovery,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “Thank you to everyone who alerted us and for your ongoing support in our efforts to protect wildlife.”

On Thursday, severe thunderstorms swept across the state of Florida, causing major flooding and several rescues of people and animals.
